I’ve been talking about doing this since I moved in to the new place, and for the first time in a while I made my overly-ambitious coffee-induced creative fantasies come true. After a few lunch breaks spent at Home Depot (most of which resulted in teary-eyed frustration and an extra cigarette break), anxiously awaiting the nailhead trim via obsessive refreshings of the UPS tracking site, and a Saturday afternoon spent mulling over fabric swatches at Mood (PJ Runway fans- I’m lookin’ at you!), I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.

This is the result (now I’m regretting these shitty mupload photos but I have downtime at work and hyped on coffee and neeeed to accomplish somethinggg):

Because my I chose to take these photos on my phone and not care, I will post a swatch of the fabric taken from Mood’s website to do this piece some justice. On the subject of Mood: I love that store. This fabric took a while to get because they shipped it from New York for me because I’m a freakingg DIVAAA (actually, if you’re buying upholstery fabric from Mood in LA they only have samples available in-store and order it from New York- regardless of your ego).

I just had an idea! I could potentially make these to raise money for my companion-fund (I’ve been spending my free time on Petfinder.com and am itchin to get a little guy to take care of and love me for the next 10-15 years) So- If you want one email me at caroline.hope.denton@gmail.com

B&W film I finally scanned in from over a year ago. I waited so long because I was upset that I chose to use 3200 speed film for this, producing an extremely grainy image. But now I’m over it.

These photos were taken during my last college spring break spent with friends in Seattle. Most of these photos were taken at Treehouse Point in the Snowqualmie Valley of Issaquah, WA.

Earlier this week the Huffington Post published an article titled “A Dude’s Take on Girls” by James Franco (you know, just your normal ‘dude’). Of course I rolled my eyes when I saw Franco wrote this. Could he just stick with acting and stop pretending to be an intellectual? I love when people try to educate themselves, I really do, but I feel like this guy came to class to talk instead of to learn, and came to the Huffington Post to poop out of his mouth rather than challenge the minds of readers. I have another reason to support this point, but I will bring that up later*. Enough with Franco’s artfully oversaturated mind, I want to talk mostly about Girls, and a little bit about this “dude’s” opinion of it.

I agree with one thing he says: and that’s that Hannah needs to get a fucking job. If you truly are desperate for money, and no “real” degree-requiring job will take you, then work at 7-Eleven. You can’t be picky at this point.

Franco goes on to explain that Lena Dunham has an advantage because at the end of the day, she’s a winner playing a loser. First of all- advantage in what? Is this a race? WTF is he talking about? As an actor, doesn’t Franco know that the same could be said for the actor-character dynamic on the majority of television shows and movies? How about fucking Pineapple Express, Franco? You can play a loser stoner because at the end of the day you’re actually a… never mind, point taken. But seriously, not very often do successful actors play successful actors (ignore Entourage on this point). I don’t know why this makes me mad, he isn’t saying there’s anything wrong with this necessarily, but it’s a stupid redundant point to make and I don’t appreciate his tone one bit.

Here’s why I think Girls is great and deserves all the attention it’s getting: it’s raw, it’s effortlessly funny, I don’t feel fat after I watch it, and it’s following a not-so-glamorous and often dismissed demographic. Also, I just want to point out how many shitty comedies are out there… just sayin.

I am sick of people (and Franco) saying they feel unrepresented in this show, like, what the fuck does that even mean? I don’t feel underrepresented as a human when I watch Trueblood? I feel like Sex and the City didn’t have this criticism, and that show was wayyy more skewed than Girls. Since when do television shows have to represent every socio-economic and ethnic demographic? That’s what word problems in elementary school math textbooks are for. After all, this is what makes shows fun: they give you a look into another world, regardless of whether or not you can see yourself in it. And get this- Franco says he feels underrepresented because the guys in this show are such losers. I’ve dated people like you before, Franco, and believe me: you are all up in this show. The sheer fact that you are pointing out you aren’t like these guys, instead of just accepting their comedic relevance, is an ode to the fact that you are them, they are you, you are one. * This is total hearsay, but my friend who attended NYU at the same time as Franco said he used to stand out at the same corner in front of a Starbucks on campus or some shit (definitely one of the most populated places on campus to hang out), and ask girls to borrow their lighters. On like, a weekly basis. Total loser.

I guess I mostly feel robbed of time. If I had a boyfriend I would plop him down on the couch next to me and watch this show with him, and then ask him his thoughts on it. But I don’t have a boyfriend. You see, I like this show a lot, so I really am curious to hear a “dude’s take on girls,” but not from this dude. He doesn’t write well. Let’s face it: this whole Huffington Post relationship he’s got going is totally co-dependent and isn’t meant to benefit readers. Huff Post wants him because he’s famous and hot, and he wants Huff Post because he grows increasingly irrelevant everytime Gosling makes a new movie.

Last night I saw #ReGENERATION, a documentary film about the political and social apathy of Generation Y as they compare to the previous socially active generations of our nation (specifically, the youth of the 60s and WWII eras).

The documentary holds the typical groups to blame for this apathy problem: the government, the education system, the numbness caused by technology, advertising, mainstream media, parenting, you know, the usual groups targeted in every political documentary that attempts to “awaken” my generation. The title hints that there is a solution, in this idea of “Re-Generation,” but there is no further explanation of what regeneration would or could entail. Also, the interviews in the movie are incredibly limited. It’s not that the film is biased- I agree with the claims made- however the film focuses on one high school (which the filmmaker attended) one couple with a baby, one musician, and one band. They don’t even interview the few members of the youth who true to be social advocates but hit walls. I’m sure there are plenty of those out there.

Just as I suspected, I left the theater feeling guilty and yet the film offered no solutions, not even a hint at some plausible ways we can change our habits. As one of the lost youths of Generation Y, and someone who works in advertising (which according to this film, is like, THE WORST), I was all ears to how to redeem myself.

One good thing that came out of this documentary, however, was also the reason I kept hitting the snooze button this morning. Here’s the thing: Ryan Gosling narrated it. I won’t pretend like that’s not 60% of the reason I went. Anyways, I guess listening to Ryan Gosling for an hour and a half made me have a dream we went swimming in a pool together. It quickly turned into a nightmare, though. I was so happy that Ryan Gosling wanted to go swimming with me that I cannonballed into the pool in my jean shorts with my iPhone in my pocket. I couldn’t even enjoy this awesome dream cause my phone was ruined.

…okay, okay, it’s all coming full-circle now… maybe the documentary did have a point. But the Q&A part at the end pissed me off so much I don’t care. Too many people pooping out of their mouths, trying to get the director to like them I guess? Whatever. he winked at ME after my question so suck on that wanna-be-poet-‘question’-askers. And he looks like this (He’s cute, and he knows Ryan Gosling. I would have gone for it but my friends said no).
